Objective

To improve the livelihood of Iraq based farmers through needs-based agri supply chain optimisation

In sum

The partners of this coalition intend to work together to support local farmers to improve their production processes and livelihood. This will start with a needs assessments. Experts of Rijk Zwaan, Jiffy Group, Hatenboer-Water and Hoogendoorn will share their knowledge and expertise of respectively seeds, soil and water. This should lead to a process that is twice as effective with only 10% water use compared to the current situation. A sheer necessity in a region with such scare resources. In parallel with the production process measures, Cordaid intends to support farmers and agribusinesses along the value chain with business development services and access to finance, as well as with services and action planning that can help the farmers cope better with adverse climatic circumstances and climate change. ABC Restaurants, one of the largest restaurants in the region, is involved as end-user. They will work with farmers to select the which crops to grow in order to meet the demands of the 50.000 monthly visitors whilst adhering to the restaurant’s healthy nutrition philosophy. This results in guaranteed offtake of the farmers’ harvest. The initial geographic focus is on Northern Iraq.
